Evergreens are a great hedge to use as barriers against peering eyes. Not only will it look aesthetically pleasing, but it can also be used as a screen to cover your windows. You can plant these in a pattern and plan a decorative look to your front yard and garden. Look for some dense, fuller hedges. It is recommended to look at a variety of evergreens to use as your border. Here are some evergreen varieties you should consider:
A yew will be a dense hedge that will look great with some pruning. Multiple yews will be great as a screen as they are six feet tall and 16 feet spread in uniform hedges. These will make a great border or wall for gardens.
This Europeanfavorite looks great when shaped and pruned correctly. They will look tidy when maintained well. These boxwoods need to be pruned in late spring and sizes will vary with species. They grow best in full sun and some shade.
The green giant will thrive in any condition of soil. These will form in a pyramid shape. They will need to be planted about 5 to 6 feet apart for windbreak. These green giants grow extremely fast and can grow as tall as 60 feet and as wide as 20 feet.
These are popular for their bright green leaves and red berries. Their hollies look charming and beautiful when kept well-trimmed. Only females will grow berries, but you will need a male for cross-pollination. That being said, some newer varieties will not require two sexes. Hollies prefer more acidic soil with some peat or garden sulfur. Add as necessary. American holly is a lot more adaptable than English holly. This medium-paced growing hedge can reach 6 to 10 feet and can be 5 to 8 feet wide. Hollies should be planted 2 to 4 feet apart from each other.
Firethorn can be a little unruly, but can amazing in a landscape when planned well. This evergreen will bloom white flowers in the spring and blood orange berries from summer to winter. These are extremely popular as Christmas season decorations - who doesn’t like some naturally festive plants? This plant is tolerant of drought and will thrive in full sun as well as in some shade. Plant these 3 to 4 feet apart for faster growth. They can grow up to 12 feet tall and 5 feet wide.
This foliage of white spring flowers and red berries thrives during fall and winter. They are fast growers and can be pruned before each new growth. These can be as tall as 5 to 7 feet and as wide as 3 to 5 feet. This type of hedge loves the sun, so make sure you don’t plant it in shady areas.
This classic hedge plant isn't always considered an evergreen. The dense evergreen will look great with pruning, which can be done after flowering. During summer, there are white summer flowers and blackberries on this foliage. These are very adaptable and will grow in any condition. They will need full sun to shade and are fast growers that can go as high as 15 feet with a spread of 5 to 6 feet.
