It’s safe to say that trees and plants don’t like winter very much, and there are many reasons for this. The sun doesn’t shine as much as it does in the summer, the snow could pile up on the leaves, and we haven’t even gotten started on the lack of food and the frozensoil. Many plants and trees die during the winter because of these reasons. You don’t want your beloved plants to be one of these victims, do you? With this winter planting guide, you’ll learn how to protect your plant lives from the cold grasp of winter so that it can stay as a nice addition to your home next year.
First off, you have to make sure that the shrubs are protected from the piling snow, especially those that fall from your roof, as it can knock off the leaves and branches from the bush. You want to build a snow frame that extends a little bit beyond the roof of your home to protect the shrubs around the home. You can even opt to build hinges and hang these frames up so that you can simply take them down when springtime rolls around.
The big trees in your property don’t have it easy either, as the wind could freeze the trunks and the sun reflecting off the snow could scorch the bark. If that’s not enough, forest deer will try their hardest to get to the roots and eat it as food is scarce during the winter. The combination of these problems can kill your trees, no matter how big it is. To avoid these issues, it’s a good idea to use burlap. Here’s how you do that:
Option 1 – Wrap the Plant
The first and most common way to apply burlap is to wrap your plants to protect it from environmental damage. You won’t have to worry about your plants not getting enough sun because they will have already shed their leaves before the winter comes into full swing anyway. You can use plastic wraps or Ziploc bags to cover the branches to trap the moisture inside the foliage to make sure that the branches don’t die. This is quite rudimentary, and it may not protect against most types of damage, but it’s better than leaving your plants out to fend for themselves.
Option 2 – Build a Tent
This might take a lot more effort and time to set up, but it’s a much better way of doing it. You can build fences around your tree and put canvas down on the areas where the major roots are to prevent the deer from digging and getting to roots. It will also warm up the ground in that area so that the soil doesn’t freeze over around those areas.
If you plan to set up burlap, make sure you get it done before the peak of winter sets in. It may have been too late to try to protect your plants when the worst of winter comes. You want to make sure that you set up a layer of protection that can save the plants before that time arrives, so be sure to do that as soon as the first snow falls.
