Overhanging branches can be extremely harmful to your property and every person in the area. These weakened branches can break and fall on your roof or building without warning, potentially causing detrimental damage to the property. On top of that, the tree branches can serve as a bridge for wildlife
, such as raccoons, to gain access to your home as well. This is why it is imperative that you get these overhanging branches removed as soon as you notice them. However, cutting tree limbs off a tree can be an extremely dangerous task. This means that you should know exactly what you are doing before you get into action.
Large branches are much trickier to handle than thinner branches. To ensure your safety, it is highly recommended that you hire a professional tree service for the job. As for smaller and thinner branches that you think are more manageable, read on to find out how to effectively and safely cut the branches that overhang your building.
For this particular task, you will need an extension ladder, a chainsaw, a rope, and a pruning saw or pole saw. The trick here is to cut the branch in smaller and more manageable pieces so that large branches will not fall on you or the property nearby. Moreover, make sure that your ladder is big and sturdy enough to support your weight. Follow the instructions printed on the side of your ladder very strictly. You should also have another person with you throughout to pruning process so that they can give you a hand you should you need any help. Before you start, prepare safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, and other things that you think can help protect yourself from harm during the process.
1.
Place your ladder against the building at a 75-degree angle to the roof. Extend your ladder so that there are at least 3 feet of the ladder above the roof.
2.
Get yourself on the roof and move toward the branch. If it happens that you are unable to reach the branch without having to lean forward, then you should not risk your safety and call a professional service who has a cherry picker to complete the job.
3.
If you manage to reach the branch, use a chain saw or pruning saw to cut off a small section of the branch in the size and weight that you can hold and drop to the ground without difficulty.
4.
Carry on cutting small sections until you are unable to reach the branch anymore.
5.
If the branch is sturdy and undamaged enough for you to lean a ladder against it, you can continue cutting the branch into smaller sections again. If the ladder cannot support your ladder, you can skip this step.
6.
Climb up to the branch and tie a rope to it one foot or more from the edge of the branch. Make sure that the rope reaches the ground and have slack that is at least the same length as the remaining branch.
7.
Again, lean your ladder against the trunk of the tree. Make sure that you can reach the branch with your chainsaw without having to lean too forward.
8.
Enlist the help of another person to pull the rope away from the property while you cut the branch with a pruning saw. For a branch that is too thick and heavy, you can tie the rope to your car that can effectively pull it away.
